One of the biggest success stories of St Andrew’s Hospice corporate fundraising this year has been the cute and cuddly Lucas The Bear.

Lucas is the brainchild of his namesake, eight-year-old Lucas from Cleethorpes, who attended the Business Hive to gain experience in the workplace last summer.

Business Hive Managing Director Mark Webb explained further.

“Lucas came into the Business Hive during the summer and spent a week with us,” he said.

“He showed a great eye for business and, at the end of the week, he wrote me a letter about an idea he had.

“He thought that we should produce a bear that our members bought and the funds raised could support sick children.”

Mark continued: “I thought it was a tremendous idea and one we should immediately put into action and the children’s unit at St Andrew’s Hospice seemed like the perfect charity to support.

“And what better name for the bear than Lucas? We hope he has made many new friends across Lincolnshire.”

Lucas – the Business Hive Bear was unveiled at the Business Hive Live event at Grimsby Auditorium on Tuesday 2 October, greeting attendees as they entered the building, as well as being available on the St Andrew’s Hospice stand.

He has been a regular fixture at Business Hive’s First Tuesday event, and the last bears were sold at St Andrew’s recent corporate fundraiser.

Becky Darnell is a Corporate Fundraising and Events Coordinator for the hospice and she was thrilled at Lucas’ generosity.

“For someone of such a young age to come up with an idea to help those less fortunate is so commendable,” she said.

“The teddies look amazing and they will be a welcome addition to any home.

“The funds raised will go towards supporting the work of Andy’s, the children’s unit at the hospice, so Lucas will be helping to raise a smile on the faces of our young patients.”

Lucas’ mum, Joanne is Deputy Manager at the Business Hive and she spoke of her pride at her son’s philanthropy.

She said: “We’re all so proud of Lucas to have come up with this idea to support the hospice and to Mr. Webb (as Lucas calls him) for making his dream a reality.”
