It was a case of ‘shiver me timbers’ on a bitterly cold day in Cleethorpes as the Pirates on Parade took to the streets to raise money for St Andrew’s Hospice.

Greg Stratford and brother-in-law Alan Rowson visited businesses on some of Cleethorpes’ busiest shopping streets dressed as pirates to encourage donations to the hospice.

But no one was walking the plank on the day, with the generosity of traders and the public bringing in over £2,700 to aid the hospice’s running costs.

This is the second year that Greg and Alan have taken on a fancy dress fun day for the hospice and they managed to top their 2016 fundraising total of £2,000.

But the idea for a themed fundraising day started in very modest circumstances, as Greg explained.

“It started with a trip to the Panto in Hull in 2016,” he said.

“We took our grandkids and dressed up in elf jumpers and silly shoes.

“My daughter Nicola suggested doing something similar for charity and helped us set up a JustGiving page and, before you knew, the generosity of everyone and a bucket collection later, we had raised £2,000 for the hospice.”

Spurred on by their fundraising efforts, Greg had been planning a similar fundraising push for 2017.

He continued: “I had plenty of time to think about what we could do and I decided to go with pirates.

“We just wanted to go about our daily routine, which would mean going for some grocery shopping, having lunch with friends and family and then visiting a few other shops.

“We were armed with a bucket and were able to post a few video clips and photos to Facebook, which helped spur on the support.

“We also did a photo shoot a few days beforehand at the Fishing Heritage Centre, which was a lot of fun!”

It was the support of local businesses that really stood out on the day. A visit to Oliver’s Eatery on the Central Promenade in Cleethorpes saw a cheque being presented for £915 from donations received throughout the year.

The pair also visited Blue Ivy Home Furnishings, Willow & Co and Comley Cameras on their travels.
