Raise a smile

If a life will be short, let us fill it with joy!

When you know a child’s life will be short, every moment really does count and every smile is treasured all the more.

At Andy’s, we have been helping young members of the local community with life-limiting conditions for over 20 years. Throughout this time, thousands of families have come to know Andy’s as a safe place where they can relax, feel special, enjoy their surroundings and have access to the care that they need. We are now looking to the future and developing the services Andy’s offers to meet the changing needs of the children in our community with life-limiting illnesses.

There are almost 2,000 young people in the local community who face the challenges of living with a serious medical condition. Life for these children can be lonely and isolating. Their families rely on the care, compassion and support that we offer.

Hektor smileOne of the most important things we do at Andy’s is make special moments for our patients and their families.

What would normally be a small treat for a child, like a trip to the seaside, becomes so much more than that when your child has developmental problems. That’s why our fabulous team work with families to make these moments possible, to bring smiles to our patient’s faces and importantly, to help the children meet their developmental milestones. This is exactly what happened with Hektor earlier this year:

Hektor is a very special little boy who is growing up in a very challenging world. His cerebral palsy, quadriplegia and development complications make him extremely sensitive to new environments. He spends most of his life being held for reassurance as he has suffered seizures when he gets upset.

“We knew that to help Hektor in his next steps, we needed to get him out into the world. Living close to the coast, we thought a trip to the beach would be perfect, letting him feel the sand between his toes and the sea breeze in his hair. So we took him out to play on the sand.

Managing the journey itself was a huge achievement for Hektor, and we were so proud of him. When he felt the sand on his feet and the wind on his face it was priceless – his smile shone brighter than the sun! Another family heard his giggles and stopped us to say how wonderful it was. The fact that total strangers could appreciate this made the day perfect.”

At Andy’s, we always try to make special moments happen for our patients, making sure each family is helped to meet their important milestones. A trip to the seaside is such a simple thing to so many of us – but to Hektor it meant the world and opens the door to school being a real possibility for him.

Please help us raise a smile for the children in our care.
