First, decide whether to hold your quiz online or in-person. A virtual quiz is a quick and easy option, but an in-person event is often more engaging and can help raise even more vital funds to support local hospice care.

Hosting an online quiz:

Choose a video call platform (e.g., Zoom or Teams) for broadcasting, and set up a way for participants to submit answers, such as through an online form. Ask attendees to donate in advance via a JustGiving page.

Hosting an in-person quiz:

Secure a venue, such as a local pub, community centre, or school. Pubs are a popular choice, and you may be able to persuade the owner to provide the space for free, given that it’s for a local charity. You can also boost your fundraising efforts by selling refreshments, hosting a raffle, or running a small auction during the event.

Regardless of your format, promote your quiz widely! Use posters at workplaces, local venues, and around Grimsby, as well as through social media using the templates provided.

For many, it’s the fun of taking part and supporting St Andrew’s Hospice that matters most. However, offering prizes can encourage more participation:

  • Approach local businesses for prize donations, such as gift vouchers or hampers
  • If the quiz is hosted at a pub, the owner might offer a bottle of wine, a free drink, or a meal voucher as a prize
  • Create a prize pot by restricting a small proportion of the funds raised and sharing this with the winning team (while making it clear how the money will be split)
  • Alternatively, offer unique non-monetary prizes, such as free event tickets or donated services like gardening or babysitting.

Make your quiz accessible and enjoyable for all by including a variety of rounds that appeal to different ages and interests. General knowledge and topical questions, combined with music, film, and sport rounds, are always crowd-pleasers.

Interactive rounds like "guess the song", picture quizzes, or puzzles such as anagrams and dingbats can also add some extra fun. Aim for 4–6 rounds with a break in the middle to keep the evening lively and engaging.

Consider adding a theme to your quiz, especially if it aligns with the time of year or your audience’s interests. Popular options include:

  • Seasonal themes (e.g., Christmas, Halloween, or summer)
  • TV, film, or music
  • Sports
  • Local Grimsby trivia or knowledge about St Andrew’s Hospice.

Encourage participants to come in themed fancy dress for added fun and to help make the night even more memorable.

If you’re using an online fundraising page, link this to St Andrew’s Hospice and the funds will be sent directly to us. You can get free tips on how to set up you page through our Just Giving Guide. If you plan on asking for cash donations contact us at the hospice before your event and we can provide you with an event pot to safely secure donations. If you’ve collected cash donations, you can bring them into the hospice, or we can advise you on how to pay them in securely. Be sure to let us know about your quiz in advance so we can support you with resources, tips, and promotion to help make your event a success!
