A roaring success as wellbeing garden receives new workshop thanks to Grimsby & Cleethorpes Lions

We were delighted to officially open our new garden workshop, thanks to a generous donation from the Grimsby and Cleethorpes Lions. 

As well as the new workshop, the Wellbeing Garden now hosts a vegetable garden full of potatoes, and a recreational space for patients to enjoy. 

The workshop materials were supplied and installed by Platers Fencing and Garden Buildings, in conjunction with the Lions.

Joanne Jones, Bids and Grants Officer at St Andrew’s Hospice, opened the event by recognising the effort the Lions have put in getting the project to this stage. 

“I first met Paul Teanby back in April 2024,” she said. “We started chatting about the Lions possibly supporting us.  

“The timing was perfect as Naomi (Senior Palliative Care Nurse) had just been talking to me about the wellbeing workshop needing to be replaced.  

“Over a year later, I am delighted to share with you all our great new workshop, which has been fully funded by the Lions. Your support is so very generous, and we would like to take this opportunity to thank every one of you.”

Naomi Turrell, Senior Palliative Care Nurse for Wellbeing, spoke about how the new facility will support patients access outdoor activity. 

“The old shed was falling apart rather quickly, so we’ve kindly had it replaced. We’ve got new work benches that are being fitted inside it and a ramp that means our wheelchair patients can access it.  

“We can also use electrical appliances in there and it’s all watertight, so we can use it in whatever weather.”  

Paul Teanby, Fundraising Chairman for Cleethorpes and Grimsby Lions Group, spoke about what it has meant for the Lions seeing the project come to life. 

“This is a much bigger project than we’ve had in a long while.  

“You can see people who are here today will be able to come and sit here in the garden and plant some pots. That’s what it’s all about.”    

Michelle Rollinson, Chief Executive of St Andrew’s Hospice, remarked about the amount of support the hospice has received to complete the workshop.  

“It’s a huge help for patients to have a workshop that is fully accessible. It’s going to make a real difference; the generosity of the Lions has been fantastic.”
